What I like about this approach is that it encourages park visitors to stop and observe, rather than snap that bison photo and rush onto the next sighting. The detailed information on habitats comes in handy for understanding where to look for specific birds. Most have plump bodies, long necks and short wings. Like some of the other publications, the author includes much of the habitat information in the group listing introduction pages as opposed to the individual species listings. A bird's colors appear to differ greatly when viewed in different lights, while in looking up in the tree tops, it is often impossible to see any color at all without the aid of a good field glass.

I have even created a version that runs on a Pocket PC and a cell phone, but I have not pursued either of these commercially. Together with the volume on passerines, published in 2007, this book covers all the non-perching birds of the Palearctic, a zoographical area running from the British Isles eastwards to Japan, with its southern border marked by the Sahara, the Middle Eastern deserts, and the Himalayas. For trip reports on Costa Rica, I recommend Fatbirder.

A complete checklist of the birds of the Yucatan Peninsula provided by Avibase including endemic, endangered, threatened, and accidental species. Other wading birds are less impetuous and hunt slowly with great patience and stealth. Most note that they are a "Guide to Field Identification" on the cover. That is when Roger Tory Peterson published A Field Guide to the Birds, a seminal guide for identifying the birds of eastern North America in the field. The plates combine those from the previous addition with new ones, and most are excellent (those by Guy Tudor are particularly stunning).
